Summer Launchpad kicks off

Once upon a time….umm in fact on 8th of June, LUTES office was crowded already early in the morning with a bunch of tired people, as the sun had hardly risen on that day. How come people still hang out at the university, even though the academic year is over? The reason is simple, but yet very intriguing: LUTES Summer Launchpad 2015 is about to start!

In the beginning of the first week the teams got to know each other first, as many of them saw each other for the first time in their lives. After playing together a bit, the teams were shown their offices, where they can work freely 24/7 if needed. In addition to these, the teams designed their business cards and each participant received their brand new business cards during the same week almost before the ink had even dried up! In the end of the first week the teams started to progress and they had to consider which type of problems their offering would solve and therefore define the basics for demand. Also, the teams had their first training session with serial entrepreneur Kaija Pöysti.

In the beginning of SLP’s 2nd week, the teams started to develop Business Model Canvases for their business ideas. This was essential to be done in the beginning, as the teams were able to get a clear picture of their business ideas, how they create value and what type of expenditures and revenues could be expected. The week continued with sales and marketing –training, in where the teams got very useful tips and also received personal mentoring!

Even though Summer Launchpad is based on tight schedule and requires a lot of work – the sacrifice that has to be made in order to build a good base for a company – we also combined business and spare time! The business ideas vary from environmental consulting and social entrepreneurship to trading natural gas and commercializing private flight business. As there is a tight group of people available during the whole summer, which in addition shares the same passion towards entrepreneurship, what would be better situation to test your offering than them? Gladly, the teams realized this possibility and therefore some of the team members, as well as both camp managers were able to try out how it feels to fly with an ultra-light –airplane as the first customers! The writer of this blog definitely recommends this experience and thinks that everyone should experience it at least once in their lifetime. In addition to serving new experiences for the participants of Summer Launchpad, this was a great way to gather customer feedback in order to get to know what type of aspects still require improving. This is exactly what the best part of working together is: both parties can enjoy and benefit mutually. This is what we could call the team spirit that entrepreneurship requires!

As Midsummer Day was approaching, we only had four days of hard work during second week. In the end of the week we were still able to define mission and vision and define the core values of the offerings. On Thursday we finally went for a short, well-earned vacation. So far the journey of Summer Launchpad teams is still in its beginning and we still got eight more weeks to go, so stay tuned and Get Inspired!
